Conservation. What is It?

60% of Belize’s land surface covered by forests, a coastline bordered by the world's second largest barrier reef and a seascape dotted with some 450 cayes, Belize is a natural paradise that houses great biodiversity and natural resources. Thus the reason for conservation, which means  the official supervision of rivers, forests, and other natural resources in order to preserve and protect them through prudent management.  It is the careful utilization of a natural resource in order to prevent depletion.

What goods and services are provided by our environment?

Protected Areas

Protected areas constitute an important stock of natural, cultural and social capital, yielding flows of economically valuable goods and services that benefit society, secure livelihoods, and contribute to the sustainable use of natural resources. Protected areas are key to buffering unpredictable impacts of impending climate change.  It is important to create comprehensive, effectively managed and sustainably funded protected areas.
